BMW K 1600 GT and GTL

BMW Motorrad had announced in 2009 – when presented at EICMA, the “Concept 6″- which would have six-cylinder engine that made its debut on a touring bike. Many were skeptics, either by a factor of space, either because they are two six-cylinder piston more than the habit that everyone has the four-line and, either because the displacement of 1600 cc seems really more car and motorcycle. In Monaco, however, were able to impress once again and after only one year of that concept so much admired all ‘is arrived at’Intermot 2010 , the six-cylinder touring bikes: the new BMW K 1600 GT and GTL. The House Ethics is showing that it is based on the history of its own means (by continuing to develop the idea of tourism), but who dares, is proposed, but most of the technology that makes your business card. Technology that pours in addition to the six-cylinder engine, first built by, and, in BMW, including the debut of the system “Adaptive Headlights(optional), a technology that enables the headlamps to move to second parameters read from the controller. There really is a lot to discover on this bike, and we will do it later, step by step, with new insights about the German Admiral.

He could not undergo a major renovation, the aesthetics. The new K 1600, are therefore completely new. sophisticated, powerful, fascinating, but above all unique. The line is very personal, with an important front where the front lights focused attention. These are the same as used on BMW, circular and the light position on the perimeter of the light itself. The arrows on the LED are integrated into the hull and above are the two mirrors which consist of two brackets. The windscreen (electronically adjustable and the largest GTL) is off to protect both the driver’s seat. Behind these, the cockpit is particularly technological: the speedometer and rev counter have to scale arena and not flat, and special lighting provides a feeling of three dimensions. Alongside this, the two stereo speakers. In aluminum, the handle.

Even after the two discharges attract attention, one for each side and with three mouths. The LED tail light is obviously and integrates position, brake light and the two indicators. Imposing the plate for the housing of the top box, standard and amortized on the GTL (with integrated passenger backrest).
The colors seen for the K 1600 GT bodywork Vermollionred Metallic (red) and the Lightgrey Metallic (gray), with the engine painted in Platinum metallic frame, wheels and some part of the hull Ostragrau metallic. For the K 1600 GTL however, it was thought to elegance, with a metallic Mineralsilber (almost a pearl) and a Royalblau Metallic (blue), with the engine always colored platinum, but with the elements listed in color for the GT Magnesium metallic.

What is perhaps the most important and innovative of the bike is the engine: in-line six-cylinder 1649 cc, 100 mm narrower than the other you are online so far made in the motorcycle sector, and with a stroke / bore distribution boards of 67.5 to 72 mm. The weight of the engine is 102.6 kg including clutch, gearbox and alternator (The weight including 90% of fuel for the GL 319 and 348 for luggage without including Topcase GLT) and is capable of 160 hp at 7,750 rpm and maximum torque of 175 Nm at 5,250 rpm. To be the engine as close as possible, groups and secondary electrical power supply units were placed behind the cylinder block, for a total width of 555 mm, or just over four in a line of large displacement. The inclination is always 55 degrees and forward, in order to lower the center of gravity.

The head sees the camshaft tube powered by a toothed chain and cup tappets. The compression ratio is high, 12,2:1 for maximum efficiency. The integrated dry sump lubrication, in order to optimize the flow of oil. With regard to the exchange, has three shafts, clutch size and low self, and of course the final drive by shaft.
The braking system comes standard on BMW Motorrad Integral ABS, which is a low-profile anti-lock brake system. For brakes, there are two 320 mm front brake discs and a single disc the same size at the rear. The front calipers are four opposing pistons, while the rear are two in line.

The butterflies are the injection of 52 mm and are controlled by an electric or E-Gas, aka Ride-By-Wire. The new K 1600 offer the possibility to select three mappings: Rain, Road and Dynamic. The first is for wet roads, and offers smooth delivery of the motor. The Road is dedicated to tourism and is the compromise, whereas Dynamic is more sporty driving and provides the best performance. All this bendiddio for consumption as a reference: BMW Motorrad said consumption for the K 1600 GT of 4.5 l/100 km at a speed of 90 km / h. Autonomy is also ensured by the large tank, two-tone as dictated by current fashion, which also offers a capacity of 24 liters for the GT and 26.5 liters for GTL.

The central frame is a double beam of light alloy, and the suspensions are the same as fitted to the current four-line, or Duolever and Paralever. So the balance: 52% front and 48% at the rear, so as to maintain a good compromise when traveling in two and with luggage. The frame is aluminum and weighs only 16 kg and is fixed on these eight points in the engine.
The rims are aluminum alloy with styling and are home to ten rays tires 120/70ZR17 front and 190/55 ZR17 rear.

We have already said that the new K 1600 are equipped with xenon headlights active, this means that the lights follow the curve in order to improve visibility at night and of course increase security. In short, the system “Adaptive Light Control” shall consist of a main xenon projector with a rotating center module and a reflective mirror that using sensors “understand” the variations in load (braking, acceleration, etc ) and change the direction of light, thanks to a motor control. Still on the subject lights are available as optional extra projectors and LED lighting on the ground, and the new K 1600 series will have a new network of board 2010. Thanks to the CAN-bus technology (Controller Area Network), there are fewer cables than usual.

So we are thirty total units that handle everything, including ABS, DTC and burglar alarm. Still electronics, and we talk about the windshield with memory function (standard) which then crush protection, or if the Plexiglas encounters obstacles, not proceed with the command imposed by the pilot. And yet, the DRC, namely the monitoring of tire pressure. EWS, the electronic immobilizer security system (standard). DWA, the central locking system in combination with the security system, which closes all locks, trunks and glove. TFT and Multi-Controller (standard)or a 5.7-inch color screen on the first, where you view all the necessary information and that increases in brightness, thanks to a photocell, and the second, which saw the debut in 2009 with the R 1200 RT, a control site on the left handlebar that allows you to manage the site on the TFT screen menu, the computer onboard navigation system, heating saddle and grips (standard), cruise control (standard) and of course the stereo system (standard only on GTL). This offers the possibility to: MP3 player, iPod, USB flash drives and CD player.
