Hypothetical arrival of the boxer engine with DOHC heads on the updated version of the R1200R we have already discussed a few weeks ago. Its presentation in a not too distant future is, in our opinion, quite obvious why the naked Bavarian always shared with the rest of the range boxer – R1200 GS , RT and S – all the technical basis, except of course some things are necessary to meet the different
uses. If the renewal of the series boxer follow this “ladder” to the appeal lacked only the sportier version of the “R”, the R1200S. Entering the merits of the marketing decisions of the Bavarian house, leave last, or almost precisely the “S” is a bit ‘a contradiction in terms. The DOHC engine is derived from that of the beautiful HP2 Sport, and if in the range of BMW motorcycles is akin to a super boxer, is precisely the R1200S. Imagine then that the debut of the new engine on GS (and RT) was dictated by a desire to keep on levels of ‘state of the art’ the queen of the charts for sale.
In the past, but just the “S” version of the German boxer has “skipped” a generation. The R1100S is never been 1150…. The maximum “bright” caught up with the introduction of the ignition to twin spark at the end of 2002 but the increase in displacement from 1085 cc to 1130 never arrived, making 1170 cc directly at the launch of the series “1200.” If the shaft R1200S still remain in “cohabitation” with the rest of the range equipped with the new engine would be an oddity. To know there is probably to wait almost a year .
