The pair spent the day yesterday in the wind tunnel at the aerodynamics department of the BMW Group in Monaco of Bavaria (GER). The main intention, as can be imagined, was to optimize the aerodynamic position of both riders on the BMW S 1000 RR. The test took place in a simulated speed of up to 240 km / h, where the two riders have tried different body positions in the saddle, in order to find the lowest possible resistance and improving the Cx.

The team also worked on optimizing the efficiency of the aerodynamic fairing of the BMW S 1000 RR in version 2011. All data collected will now be analyzed in detail by the technicians of Monaco of Bavaria, right on the basis of these results, the bike will be ready and prepared for the next winter test to be held in late November at Jerez.

“The driving position is the main factor for the overall aerodynamic efficiency of the rider-bike package – said Rainer Baumel, Technical Director, Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport – The locations of the head and upper body, elbows, knees and feet, can have enormous influence on the resistance, and thus on lap times. Of course, there is a location that is ideal for all drivers, because everything depends on any factors and several singles, starting with the same height and stature. The intensive work in the wind tunnel with Troy and Leon led the pilots themselves to discover their best position. At the same time, we are trying to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the bike as much as possible within the strict technical standards. – continues Baumel – This is why we evaluated various shapes and positions of the fairing. We collected a lot of important data that will help us with the bike set-up for next test. “

Troy Leon and of course are continuing with their physical preparation for the upcoming season. As you read this, are taking part in the camp “training fitness BMW , where they will be achieved by the other riders of the SBK Team BMW Motorrad Italy: James Toseland (GBR), Ayrton Badovini (ITA) and all the other drivers participating in the Championship Enduro .
